Head of School Message - Oct 2nd

Dear Parents,

Well-being is essential for our students to reach their full potential and thrive. Through Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, we know that it is essential that each member of our community have their basic and psychological, social and emotional needs met so that each individual can reach their full potential.

Our focus on building holistic well-being is celebrated annually through Global Be Well Day. This year's Global Be Well Day theme, ‘GIVING’, was the central focus as we came together as a community.

The article “Is Generosity Good for Your Health” explores the benefits of generosity, arguing that it's not only a selfless act but also has positive effects on the giver. Dr. Kelli Harding, a psychiatrist, explains that generosity can boost mood, self-esteem, and immune system while reducing stress, anxiety, and blood pressure. It also fosters social connections, which are essential for overall well-being and academic achievement.

The article emphasises that generosity doesn't have to be grand gestures; even small acts like smiling at a stranger or holding the door can have a significant impact. It encourages us to practice kindness daily and highlights the positive ripple effect that generosity can create.

The benefits of ‘giving’ align with our school's role in nurturing students' social and emotional development. By encouraging acts of kindness and service, we can help students develop empathy, compassion, and a sense of belonging, which in turn ensures that they can achieve their full potential

I am particularly struck by the idea that generosity and a small act of kindness or service can create a ripple effect of positive change. This suggests that even small efforts can have a significant impact.

This Global Be Well Day, we had the chance to hear from amazing organizations like Anh Chi Em, Blue Dragon Children’s Foundation, Laws for Paws, and VinaCapital Foundation. They visited our secondary campus to talk about their work and inspire our students to get involved.

Over the last few weeks, our community has been ‘Giving’ to support the Typhoon Yagi Appeal. Alongside your donations, we’ve seen numerous student volunteers show up after school to help us pack and organise the boxes ready to be shipped to the North. Your acts of kindness and donations to the Typhoon Yagi Appeal have made a difference in people’s lives and contributed to a strong sense of belonging and a shared act of kindness at ISHCMC. Thank you for living our values and supporting our children to feel the benefits of ‘Giving’.

In kindness and service
